Introduction In January 2018, African states gathered in Addis Ababa to adopt the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa (African Disability Rights Protocol). This groundbreaking instrument aims to protect and promote the human rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) across the continent, aligning with—yet going beyond—the scope of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Although the Protocol came into force on June 5, 2024, Ethiopia has yet to sign or ratify it. This article reflects on the key potential benefits of ratifying the Protocol for Ethiopia and its disability community.

Case Summary and Issue for Reflections - Formality requirement in Insurance Contract

The case involves the failure to comply with the formality requirements more specifically the failure of witnesses and parties to the contract to put signature on insurance policy as ground for non-existence of contract of insurance.  Asosa Zonal court upheld that there is no insurance contract because signature is missed. The Higher Court confirms the decision of the Zonal court. Then Ethiopia Insurance Company appeal against this judgment by alleging that there is fundamental error of law.

በሀገራችን ኢትዮጵያ የተሸከርካሪ አደጋ በእጅጉን እየበዛ እና ከፍተኛ የሆነ የሞትና የንብረት ጉዳት እያስከተለ ይገኛል፡፡ የበርካቶች ህይወት አጥፍቷል፣ አካል አጉድሏል እንዲሁም ንብረት አውድሟል። ሁልግዜ በየማለዳው በራዲዮ የምንሰማቸው የትራፊክ ዘገባዎችም እጅግ ዘግናኝ እና ሁላችንንም የሚያስደነግጥ፣ የህሊና እረፍት የሚነሳ እና ወቶ የመግባት ዋስትናችንን ጥርጣሬ ውስጥ የሚከት ወደመሆን ደርሶል፡፡ ችግሩ እጅግ አሳሳቢ እና አስከፊ የሚያደርገው ደግሞ ጉዳት አደራሾቹ በአደጋው ተጋላጭ ለሆኑት ግለሰቦች እርዳታ ከመስጠት ወይም እርዳታ እንዲያገኙ እና ህይወታቸው እዲተርፍ ከማድረግ ይልቅ ጉዳቱን አድርሰው የሚሰወሩ መሆናቸው ነው፡፡
